About Star Wars Ottawa
Basically, it’s a combination of two passions! I, Robert Baldwin am a hardcore Star Wars Geek and a local Ottawa filmmaker. So when I heard that Atom Films was hosting a Star Wars video challenge and that the winners were chosen at San Diego Comic Con... not to mention that one of the awards was the George Lucas Selects award! (BTW, he’s the creator of Star Wars, if you didn’t know that, leave now! :P) Well, needless to say, I had to do this!

With the support of my friends and co-workers, we quickly got into action! I wrote a script and we went out to find supporters to help out with props, costumes, equipments, etc.. Choreography was our first focus, Alain, Pat and I spent many many hours putting together the lightsaber fight scenes (watch the choreography video here). We had a blast doing this.
On the production weekend, we made a call out to many of our friends for extras. We filmed for many LONG hours but we had a blast. It was also the first time I had shot a full movie on green screens so editing was going to be a challenge! Not to mention the countless hours of rotoscoping lightsaber glows! But it’s soooo worth it! :)
All along the way, we posted pictures and update videos on YouTube, Facebook and other social media sites. The response we got was phenomenal! People, not only from Ottawa, were really into it and could not wait to see the final product. Our Mayfair premiere on July 16th 2009 was also a huge success, we had a great turnout, people enjoyed the movie and I got to meet and network with other local filmmakers, some of which I am now working closely with on other projects!

So apart from being just another geek’s fansite! (it really is though). Star Wars Ottawa fan movies is also a portal for which we can showcase the great filmmaking talent found right here in Ottawa. ...And who knows, there may just be some future Star Wars Ottawa projects on the go... (But I can’t say anything right now... ;-)
